When Candis magazine asked me to go behind the scenes for an editorial photo shoot at Betty’s Tea Room, I was thrilled. It’s famous throughout Yorkshire and beyond for delicious cakes and good service. Everyone goes to Bettys Tea Room for a treat or a special occasion. Candis magazine’s ‘behind the scenes’ is a very image-led six-page feature and so it’s important to try and get as many good images as possible.
Writer Mandy Applyard and I, arrived at the bakery in Harrogate at 8 am and received a warm welcome from Laura, Betty’s PR Manager. After styling ourselves up in the hairnet, cap and white bakers outfit we set out to see where all the delicious food is made. I kept my equipment as light as possible and travelled around with just one light and the camera gear. I found ceilings and white walls to bounce the light off in order to clean up the mixture of lighting effects in the bakery.
The staff were wonderful and all took great pride in their work. I took a variety of shots from posed portraits, to reportage photography and also still life setups. It was a hive of activity with so much going on. Luckily we had Laura to guide us through and help us find the key people to photograph and interview.
After finishing up at the bakery we moved on to the tea room, where we were treated to a gorgeous lunch before starting to photograph the customer-facing side. Again I mixed up the shots with posed portraits of staff members, alongside lifestyle reportage images and finished off with lots of little still lives of things like macaroons. It was a long but satisfying day.
I’ve been shooting for the charity DEBRA for about 3 years now. DEBRA is a charity set up to help people with EB (epidermolysis bullosa). EB is a group of genetic skin conditions which cause the skin to blister and tear at the slightest touch.
